Radio Ibda’a 194
Ibda’a Radio (Radio 194) was one of the media projects launched by the Ibda’a Association in Dheisheh Refugee Camp – Bethlehem. It is considered one of the first pioneering initiatives of its kind within Palestinian refugee camps in the field of community media. The radio was established with the aim of providing an audio platform for young men and women to express their opinions, develop their skills in media, broadcasting, presenting, and audio production, as well as to strengthen the role of media as a tool for social and cultural awareness within the camp.
The radio produced a variety of programs addressing youth issues, education, health, culture, and national identity. It also provided a space to highlight local community stories and shed light on the challenges faced by residents in Palestinian refugee camps. The project primarily relied on involving young people in content creation and presentation, which helped build their media capabilities and develop practical skills in communication, public speaking, and teamwork within a training-based media environment.
Despite the positive impact it achieved, Ibda’a Radio was later shut down due to the lack of an official broadcasting license. Nevertheless, it remains an important and influential experience in the history of youth media work within the institution, and an early model demonstrating the importance of empowering young people in media as a means of expression and social impact, while reinforcing the role of local media in serving the issues of the camp and Palestinian society in general.
